Costa del Sol Weather in October

Summer's tail in the first fortnight and mild autumn by half term: in most years you can still swim, and the first showers rarely spoil a whole week.

Is the Costa del Sol warm in October?

Yes, warm rather than hot. Afternoons average about 23°C on the western Costa del Sol and nights about 16°C, which is the gap between a T-shirt lunch on the paseo and a light jumper for dinner outside. The first fortnight often still feels like late summer, with still air, a high sun and the beach busy with local families at the weekend. By the last week the afternoons soften, the evenings draw in and the first proper autumn weather can arrive.

Rain comes back this month after a dry summer. An average October brings about 80 mm, falling on around 6 days with at least 1 mm, which still leaves the large majority of days dry. You also get around 7 hours of sunshine a day, so a week here in October is far more likely to be sunny than not. If you are watching the weather before you fly, our live page has a seven-day forecast for Sabinillas.

The end of October is the part of the month people ask about most. Expect afternoons a few degrees cooler than at the start of the month, fresher mornings, and an hour less evening light once the clocks change on the last Sunday.

Can you swim in October?

For most people, yes, especially early in the month. The satellite record for the water off Sabinillas (NASA JPL MUR, 2003–2025) averages 19.6°C for October, and the monthly average has ranged from 17.2°C in 2020 to 20.8°C in 2018. The sea cools through the month, so the first week is usually noticeably kinder to get into than the last.

In practice, swimmers who are happy in the sea at home will enjoy it all month, families with small children will find the first half of October the comfortable window, and if you feel the cold, treat late-October dips as short and bracing. By now the water here is about the same as off Málaga: the summer gap, when Atlantic water flowing in through the Strait keeps this end of the coast fresher, has closed.

The sea is mostly gentle this month. In a four-year wave record for the water just off the beach, about 32% of October days stayed under half a metre and only around 15% reached a metre or more, mostly on windy days. Check the beach flag before you go in, as you would anywhere in Spain.

Early vs late October, and the half-term week

Two dates shape a late-October trip. On Sunday 25 October 2026 the clocks go back an hour in both Spain and the UK, so Spain stays an hour ahead of home, but sunset in Sabinillas drops overnight from about 19:30 to about 18:30. Across the whole month, daylight shrinks from 11.8 to 10.7 hours.

Most English schools take October half term from 26 to 30 October 2026, and some areas take two weeks from 19 October, so check your own school's dates. That week is busier for flights and prices, though not on the beach. Even after the clock change you get far more evening light here than at home: on the last day of the month the sun sets at 18:26 in Sabinillas, against 16:35 in London.

What's on in October around Sabinillas

October is a quiet, local month on this stretch of coast: no big summer fiestas, but a run of things that are better now than at any other time of year.

Fiesta Nacional, Monday 12 October 2026

Spain's national day is a public holiday. Banks and offices close, but it is one of Andalucía's authorised trading days, so the big supermarkets may open on reduced hours.

The end of the autumn bird migration

The great southbound passage of birds of prey over the Strait of Gibraltar runs from mid-July to mid-October, and young griffon vultures keep moving until late November. The viewpoints above Casares and around Tarifa are within easy reach of Sabinillas.

The Copper Forest starts to turn

From late October the chestnut woods of the Genal valley, inland behind the coast, turn gold and then copper for about three weeks. The exact dates move with each year's weather, so it is a late-October or early-November outing.

Golf season gets going

With the summer heat gone, the courses around La Duquesa and Estepona come into their best months. October is popular, so book tee times a few weeks ahead.

Walking in the Sierra Bermeja

October and November are the pick of the hiking year in the mountains behind Estepona: cooler air, clear views and comfortable temperatures on the climbs.

All Saints is on its way

From late October the bakeries fill with huesos de santo and buñuelos, the sweets of Todos los Santos. In 2026 the feast falls on Sunday 1 November, so Andalucía moves the public holiday to Monday 2 November.

Day trips without the summer crowds

Ronda, the Alhambra in Granada and the white villages are far more comfortable to explore now than in July and August, and the queues are shorter.

Friday and Sunday markets

The street markets run all year: the Friday market on the paseo and the Sunday Rastro, the biggest in the area. October's milder mornings make them far pleasanter than in August.

What to wear in October

Pack summer clothes and swimwear for the days, plus a light jumper or jacket for the evenings, especially after the clocks change. Add a packable rain jacket for the odd showery day, comfortable flat shoes for the paseo and the old towns, and sun cream, because the October sun is still strong enough to burn at midday. If you plan to walk in the hills or visit Ronda, bring a warmer layer: it is noticeably cooler inland and higher up.

September is the month for guaranteed beach weather, with a sea still around 21°C and afternoons about 26°C, but it is high season and priced like it. October gives you most of that warmth at mid-season rates, with a sea of about 20°C and the first chance of rain. November is quieter and cheaper again, about 19°C by day with a 17°C sea: better for walking, golf and the Copper Forest than for swimming.

Frequently asked questions

For most people it is one of the best-value months: warm days around 23°C, a sea that is still swimmable early in the month, far fewer people than in summer and mid-season prices. The trade-off is the first autumn rain, on around 6 days in an average October.

Warm rather than hot. By the last week the afternoons are a few degrees cooler than the October average of 23°C, mornings and evenings are fresher, and after the clocks go back on 25 October the sun sets at around half past six. Plenty of half-term visitors still sunbathe and swim.

Yes. With around 7 hours of sunshine a day and highs of about 23°C, sunbathing is comfortable on most days, especially out of the wind and in the first half of the month. The midday sun is still strong, so use sun cream.
